Item Description
Published in June 9,1883 issue of "Punch." Art comes w/vintage mat w/4x5.75" opening w/original art of well-dressed couple in black ink that has aged to dark brown in color. Mat has hand-inked caption reading "Snobley: Aw-Aw- It Must Be Very Unpleasant For You Americans To Be Governed By People -Aw- Whom You Wouldn't Ask To Dinner! American Belle: Well! Not More So, Perhaps, Than For You In England To Be Governed By People Who Wouldn't Ask You To Dinner!" DuMaurier has signed in ink at bottom right. Mat margin edge has aging, but will frame to Exc. appearance. DuMaurier (1834-1896) began drawing two cartoons per week for "Punch" in 1865, and is also known for the novels "Trilby" and "Ibbetson."
