Item Description
Large 18x18.5" (18x23" counting handles) brown paper shopping bag has been boldly signed in black felt tip pen across the front by Andy Warhol (1928-1987), the American artist who was a leading figure in the visual art movement known as pop art. His works explore the relationship between artistic expression, celebrity culture, and advertisement that flourished by the 1960s. After a successful career as a commercial illustrator, Warhol became a renowned and sometimes controversial artist. In addition to Warhol's 10.25" wide signature (which appears to have been dated "December 75"), Warhol has added a 3x5" rough sketch of one of his iconic Campbell's soup cans, though the name is not very legible (though "Soup" is legible). Black felt tip pen sketch/signature has aged so that ink now appears dark brown to the materials used in making this shopping bag, which has horizontal fold across center. This fold does cross Warhol's signature, but does not greatly detract visually. Fine/VF. An impressive display piece. Comes with Hake's COA and JSA LOA.
