Item Description
Lot of five (not including mailing envelope) items issued by Australian newspaper "The Argus" in 1949. Lot includes 7/8" dia. brass disc w/recessed image of Superman along w/name of Australian newspaper "The Argus." Below this are the words "Superman Club." Issued by a Melbourne daily newspaper which published the Superman comic strip. The strip started in 1945 but the club was active 1947-1949. Scarce even in Australia. Exc. Also included are original mailing envelope (w/Argus return address) w/printed recipient name/address. This matches enclosed 5.75x9" membership certificate for "The Argus Superman Club" which features full body image of Superman and faint inked member name, date and "The Editor" signature. Envelope shows obvious aging/wear and is VG. Certificate has some scattered handling wear/aging w/1/8" and .25" insect holes at bottom center. VG/Fine. Rare and first we've offered in our 48 years. 9x12.25" letter format and 9x12.5" landscape format full color comic sections w/"Superman" cover features have even moderate aging w/first format folded as issued. Fine-VF overall. Last item is 3.75x8.5" ink blotter w/full body image of Superman that was issued by Argus as "A Super Blotter From Superman - Meet Him With Lots Of Other Exciting People In The Argus Super Comic" and goes on to mention Superman club. Blotter has some handling wear w/heavy vertical crease at right and faint horizontal crease at center, but remains unused. Fine/VF. Very rare and first we've seen in our 48 years.
