Approximately 10-7/8x16-7/8" artboard has pencil original art by Todd McFarlane w/inks by Joe Rubinstein for Amazing Spider-Man #304, published by Marvel Comics Sept. 1988. Title splash page shows close-up of a hand holding a copy of the book "Webs," a collection of Peter Parker's Spider-Man photos. It is Peter's hand and needless to say, he is shocked by the news from Daily Bugle publisher J. Jonah Jameson that the book was published without his permission. The cover of the "book" features full body image of Spider-Man mid-swing, exhibiting the highly stylized body dynamics and signature webbing McFarlane became known for during his time with Spider-Man.
"When Todd McFarlane first started drawing Spider-Man for Marvel in the late '80s, it was like nothing comic readers had ever seen before. Leading into the '90s, McFarlane's style helped announce an exciting new era for comic readers. There's more than a few Spider-Man fans that can trace their love of the character to Michelinie and McFarlane's run." expressed Hake's Senior Consignment Manager Mike Bollinger. "This piece is certain to make one lucky bidder very happy."
Story page 1. Spider-Man image is all original art. The hand at lower left is pasted stat with some original art elements, including inked shading and white correctional fluid touch-up to thumb. Captions, word balloon and credits have been hand-lettered as has the elaborate "California Schemin'!" story title at bottom. The "book" title and box of text below the stylized lettering are both pasted stats, though spider crossing "Webs" portion of title is original art. Page also features pasted stats for publishing indicia at top and along left margin. Top margin has inked title and issue/page numbers as well as month of publication with strips of clear tape at top/bottom center. Bottom margin has been signed in blue ink by McFarlane at lower right and in black ink by Rubinstein (on piece of white tape at bottom center) and letterer Rick Parker. Blue pencil editorial notations on front, along top and upper right margins. Back of artboard has Marvel Comics copyright inkstamp as well as rough blue pencil layout design for cover with number of notations. Inked reseller price at upper right. Top margin has been unevenly trimmed with jagged edge at upper right. Artboard has pinholes at top and bottom right corners. Some scattered dust soiling to margins, but art remains clean and VF/Exc. Art was obtained in-person from McFarlane at San Diego Comic-Con. Comes with multi-signed reading copy of the comic this art was produced for, signed on title page by McFarlane, Rubinstein, letterer Rick Parker and editor Jim Salicrup, who adds "'92" date.
