11.5x17" DC Comics Sparta artboard has pencil original art by Pat Broderick with inks by Bob Smith for cover to Detective Comics #551, published by DC Comics June 1985. "Chaos Is The Calendar Man!" cover for Doug Moench's "The First Day Of Spring" Batman story, showing Batman and Robin dodging sharpened numeral projectiles being thrown by the Calendar Man, who appears in his iconic costume. Broderick's cover art features wonderful use of perspective, showing the Dynamic Duo struggling to maintain their footing on a large calendar trap while at the same time dodging Calendar Man's aim.
"No stranger to Batman and Robin, Pat Broderick's cover art for Detective Comics #551 embodies the best of the zany aspects Batman and Robin have had to confront over their long history." remarks Hake's Senior Consignment Manager Mike Bollinger. "When it comes to action-packed '80s covers, you'd be hard-pressed to find a better example. Mark your calendars bidders, you do not want to miss out on this one!"
Title/logo, "Chaos Is The Calendar Man!" cover blurb and publishing indicia are pasted stats. Top margin has stamped "Detective" title abbreviation and inked issue/page numbers as well as month of publication. Bottom margin has strip of white tape with printer notation in black marker. Art has been signed in black ink by Broderick at lower left. Back has impressive hand-lettered title/logo featuring a proposed tweak that would read "Detective Comics Starring The Batman - Together Again With Harvy [sic] Bullock." Back of artboard has extensive colored pencil notations and scribbles. Artboard has some tape residue to upper left/right margins, but art is otherwise clean and Exc. Lawrence Klein Collection.
