Item Description
Lot of five 13-1/8x19-1/8" thin artboards w/original pen and ink art by MLJ and Archie Comics artist Samm Schwartz (1920-1997), the artist most closely associated w/Jughead, serving as the lead artist on the "Jughead" solo title through much of the 1950s and early 1960s. Art comprises complete five-page "Jughead - Double Agent" story that appeared in "Jughead" #97 (June 1963). First page is splash page w/"Jughead - Double Agent" title paste-overs and inset panel showing Jughead walking w/Betty and Veronica, who are badgering him for information about Archie. Second page has seven panels and features Betty and Veronica bribing Jughead after he says he won't betray Archie, only to visit Archie as he works on his jalopy, taking notes as to Archie's nighttime activities. Third page has seven panels and shows Jughead meeting the girls at Pops' Diner to "pay" Jughead for his spy services w/a hamburger, only to be angered when they find out Archie went to a party w/o them. Fourth page has seven panels and sees Jughead grilling Archie for more information, to which Archie replies Miss Grundy has been keeping him after school. Jughead then reports back to the girls that Archie is "Seeing An Older Woman." Last page again features seven panels and shows the girls upset, only to later have Archie confide in Jughead that they both are now spoiling him. Jughead offers to find out why "For A Small Fee." Each page has handwritten title/issue number at top left and has been signed in blue ink by Schwartz. Backs of each artboard has Archie Enterprises, Inc. copyright stamp and "Comic Magazine Code Authority" approval stamp. Artboards have some lt. handling wear w/pinholes to margins but art remains Exc. Comes w/reading copy of actual comic this art appeared in.
