Item Description
7x7.5" original cardboard mount has attached 4.5x6.75" original matte finish photo. Hand printed text on margin just below the photo reads "Cuban x Giants 1904" and at lower right is photographers name "Chambers." Superb image of the team, seated on and standing behind a bench, w/ten players in uniform and two men in suits. Laying in front of the team is baseball equipment. During the first half of the decade, 1900-1910, the Cuban-X-Giants and Philadelphia Giants were the two dominant African American Baseball Clubs, barnstorming throughout the eastern U.S. and taking on all-comers. The 1904 Cuban X-Giants club featured a number of holdovers from the 1890’s Cuban Giants team, including Grant “Home Run” Johnson, who is widely regarded as the next former-Negro League great to gain admission to Cooperstown and the Baseball HOF the next time Negro League players are considered. In addition to Home Run Johnson, several other members of the late 19th Century Cuban Giants are also pictured here, including John Patterson, Clarence Williams, Harry Buckner and William Jackson. In addition to these, also shown are: Dan McCellan, Harry More, Walter Ball, James Robinson, E.B. Lamar. Mount has faint crease at lower right. Reverse has wear and aging w/some staining. Front has trace of staining across top but this blends somewhat. Trace of edge wear. Photo itself shows just lt. trace of aging but image remains sharp and crisp. Mount overall VG, photo is Fine/VF. An early and historic Negro League team photo.
