Item Description
7.5x9-3/8" hardcover w/100 pages, cloth spine and dustjacket. Frederick Fell Inc. ©1956. Book contains full color frontispiece showing book of cartoons which was presented to President Dwight D. Eisenhower by the National Cartoonists Society on June 24, 1954. Cartoonists attended a breakfast w/Eisenhower and this book reprints 95 of their specialty originals. Cartoonists who included their famous characters w/Eisenhower include Bob Kane (Batman and Robin), Wayne Boring (Superman), Bud Fisher (Mutt and Jeff), Chic Young (Blondie and Dagwood), Ham Fisher (Joe Palooka), Walt Kelly (Albert the Alligator) and Wilson McCoy (The Phantom). Book includes caricatures by Milton Caniff, Bill Mauldin and George McManus. Front of DJ has caricatures of Eisenhower by Walt Kelly (w/Albert) and one by Rube Goldberg showing Eisenhower at easel painting. Back cover has Eisenhower portrait by Frank Frazetta. DJ shows heavy and obvious wear, is incomplete as split in two and just comes along. Book itself shows scattered wear/aging and is VF overall w/Exc. pages. Comes w/6-7/8x8-7/8" typed letter on "The White House" letterhead that is dated Jan. 7, 1955 and is addressed to Wayne Boring, a comic book artist best known for his work on Superman from the late 1940s to the 1960s. Letter is from President Eisenhower and mentions a "Mr. Kelly," whom we assume to be Walt Kelly and mentions he presented Eisenhower w/the book of cartoons, which Eisenhower found "Amusing - - And In Some Cases, Almost Too Perceptive!" Eisenhower has boldly signed letter in black ink. Folded as mailed and comes w/original envelope. Lightly aged w/trace handling wear. Exc. Comes with Hake's COA and JSA LOA.
