Item Description
Perhaps only Leroy Neiman's name is more recognizable to collectors when it comes to the field of sports art. While Neiman's style couldn't be more different than the work of the artist offered here, their love and appreciation for baseball is evident. George Sosnak began his career in baseball as an umpire of military games in Germany after World War II, later umpiring at Detroit Tigers Spring Training games. It was around this time that Sosnak began to develop his distinctive folk art style, characterized by charmingly crude figures and skillfully rendered text and statistics applied w/painstaking detail. Offered here is an unfinished example of a Sosnak baseball, decorated w/"St. Louis Cardinals" design (cardinal image is unfinished), surrounded by "1968 National League Champions" text and stadium bkg. design including baseball w/"1968 - St. Louis Cardinals - Busch Memorial Stadium - Mgr. 'Red' Schoendienst" text. Side panel shows Cardinal batter hitting ball; catcher and pitcher included in scene. Two other panels are blank, though one shows lt. pencil preliminary art. Sweetspot has obvious aging/moisture staining, but inked art remains distinct. VG/Fine overall.
