Item Description
Original cardboard mailer marked "Special Gift - Open Immediately" contains 12.5x13" stiff paper bearing bw print of art by Sendak showing US Capitol dome w/images of Bill and Hillary Clinton along w/their daughter Chelsea and their cat Socks. Surrounding them are group of children including Mickey from "The Night Kitchen," Rosie and one of the monster characters from Sendak's popular children's book "Where The Wild Things Are." This Clinton Inaugural print is the only political print Sendak ever did and none were produced for sale, rather being commissioned by Sendak's publisher HarperCollins as gifts for the inaugural party (which were not signed). Some were sent out (again unsigned) to HarperCollins' major bookstore accounts. An estimated 500-1,000 were printed but only about 50 were sent to Sendak for an exclusive signing. Sendak has signed in black ink above text that reads "A Jubilant Welcome For Our New President And His Family! From The Children Of America, Maurice Sendak, And HarperCollins Publishers - January 20, 1993." NM. Very limited signed edition.
