Item Description
19.25x28” thin art board for June 19. Logo is pre-printed, rest of image area is hand done in India ink, including artist-creator “By Chester Gould” signature at top. All images are on individual thin art boards which have been cut out and glued into place, a usual practice done for years by Gould for original Sunday pages. Storyline has six scenes w/Tracy, his new partner Sam Catchem (in just his second story sequence) and Chief Patton on roof of “Jim Pistol’s Rest Sanitarium” watching Pear-Shape flying away in helicopter. Tracy uses his 2-way wrist radio in panel four to alert squad cars. Six panels have Pear-Shape inside helicopter forcing pilot Pedro to help him escape, including holding gun at back of Pedro’s head in last panel. Over the years some original Sundays had panels come off , causing some to be replaced in incorrect order. This page has panel four moved to panel 10, panel nine moved to panel 12, and is missing panel ten which was a night scene outside County zoo. Panel four featuring Tracy, Junior, Sam Catchem and the Chief was actually published as panel 10 of the June 10 previous week’s Sunday but still part of this storyline. Upper right of board has moisture staining and rippling from improper storage, blank margin edges have aging, image area of most panels is overall Fine/VF. A well-drawn early example featuring major cast members, a villain, and Tracy’s wrist radio (the forerunner of today’s smartphones).
