Item Description
10.75x13.75" and on cardboard. Top text reads "Base Ball Kansas City Monarchs/Great Bend, Tues. Aug. 24th/Game Called 5:00 P.M." This dates the piece to 1926. Features great photo image of game in progress with text "First Colored World's Series Opening Game At Philadelphia October 3, 1924 Monarchs Vs. Philadelphia/Attendance 18,500." There is also a large pennant illustration that reads "National Colored League Champions." This same photo design was used on other Monarchs broadsides we have seen but they are typically paper stock whereas this is a true broadside as it is cardboard. This also has a different inset team photo along the bottom that shows full figure images of 15 players in uniforms. Each has printed player name under image. The two keys are HOF members Jose Mendez and Bullet Joe Rogan. The other players as listed are "McNair, Joseph, Morris, O. Johnson, Allen, Moore, W. Bell, Hawkins, Duncan, C. Bell, Mothell, Drake, Sweatt." The Monarchs were one of the Negro League's greatest teams, especially in the 1920s. After sending more players to the Major Leagues than any other Negro League franchise, the team was finally disbanded in 1965. The blank reverse was used by an aspiring artist who was a fan of comic strips and in turn he did nice pen & ink drawings of such subjects as Toonerville Trolley, Mutt & Jeff and Barney Google among others. These in no way affect the front, none show though at all. However front does exhibit tan moisture staining across lower third and along right edge. Most evident on white bkg., images not greatly affected and remain strong and distinct. Other scattered aging and some lt. handling creases. VG. Exceptional broadside w/the dual images of game and team photos. Ex-Merkin Collection.
