Item Description
Ornate 18.75x23.75" wooden frame w/glass over double archival mat reveals 11x16" image area in India ink and watercolor. Used on front and back cover of "A Tale From Camp Crypt" book written by Vincent Courtney and published as one of Random House's Bullseye Books. ©1995 William M. Gaines. Wonderful scene has the Crypt-Keeper from E.C. comics as drooling "Camp Crypt" bus driver holding door open and gesturing towards viewer to come inside and join frightened kids. Fog-shrouded hill in bkg. has three cabins w/skulls above doors, from which a werewolf and mummy exit. Another cabin door has eerie eyes peering out of the darkness. A bat flies above cabins and vulture sits on "Welcome Campers" banner. Art has been boldly signed in ink by Jack Davis at lower right. Image area is bright and NM. The Crypt-Keeper debuted in "Crime Patrol" #15 (Dec., 1949/Jan., 1950), the title later becoming "Tales From The Crypt" w/issue #20 (Oct./Nov., 1950). Jack Davis became the lead artist w/issue #24 (June/July, 1951) and did all covers between 1951 and 1955 when the title ceased publication due to a rise in censorship. Comes w/reading copy of the book w/this cover art. Art is also shown on page 44 of Fantagraphics' "Jack Davis - Drawing American Pop Culture" book. Superb in every respect. The nicest Jack Davis E.C. horror related original art we've ever seen.
