Item Description
10-7/8x17" thin cardboard broadside poster for historic Sept. 22, 1927 boxing match that took place at Soldier Field in Chicago. This match was a rematch between World Heavyweight Champion Gene Tunney and former champion Jack Dempsey, whom Tunney had beaten almost a year to the day, winning the title in Philadelphia. In the seventh round, Dempsey knocked Tunney to the canvas, the first time in Tunney's career that he'd been knocked down. Dempsey ignored a newly instituted rule that required him to retreat to a neutral corner before the referee could count out the knocked-down boxer. This gave Tunney a few precious extra seconds, resulting in the fight being named "The Long Count Fight." Tunney ultimately defended his title. This broadside was for film shown shortly after the fight at the Refowich Theatre in Freeland, PA. and was printed by P.J. Carey & Sons. Poster features blue-tone photo images of both boxers. Lower left corner has 1" corner off and upper left has 1.5" sliver off edge and heavy 1.5" crease at corner w/tape added to back. Moderately aged w/some edge soiling. VG overall. Rare.
