Item Description
Kroninger began working in Greenwich Village in 1978 creating art for the East Village Eye, the National Lampoon, Esquire and the New York Times. He did a weekly political cartoon for the Village Voice. Over the years, his photo collages have been on Time Magazine and he has had a one-person show at the Museum of Modern Art. His credit list goes on and on. These two pieces are both dated, but it is unknown when or if they were published. Chances are they were and then acquired by NYC collector Marshall Levin, perhaps from the Village Voice. The first pen and ink original is on 8.25 x 13” thick paper. Upper left in non-photo blue pencil is “Ronald Reagan”. Bottom left is signed in ink “Stephen Kroninger August 6 1980.” Paper has .75” diameter artist applied white-out spot left of Reagan’s ear and some tiny edge wear with faint, minor age tone and smudges near the edges. The second piece is on thin paper 7 x 10.75”. Left edge has .5” tear with archival tape on back with small light crease near left edge and similar top right corner. The image of Reagan’s head and neck is printed but the dark area crossing his mouth is an artist applied strip of paper with irregular edges and the entire piece showing microphone, shirt, tie and jacket is a second piece of artist applied paper. This original collage is pencil dated on back bottom edge “April 15 1981”. Back has a small, faint, old tape stain at each corner with tiny show through on the front upper corners. Overall, both pieces remain in Fine condition. The 1980 pen and ink was created during Reagan’s successful 1980 re-election campaign. Two unique pieces from the Levin Collection that come with Hake’s COA.
