Item Description
First is Issue No. 4 from Feb-March 1967 four page newspaper 10x13”. Black Mask was edited by East Village residents Benn Morea and Ron Hahne whose names appear on the page 2 masthead with Cooper Station NYC address. The publication began in 1966 and ran ten issues. Among the group’s early political actions was the shut-down of the Museum of Modern Art and protests at New York University, Loeb Center. The group was critical of countercultural figures Timothy Leary and Allen Ginsburg, considering them timid and status seeking. In late 1968, Black Mask forced Bill Graham to accept “free Thursdays” (with food and drugs) at Fillmore East. Around mid-1968, the group evolved into two other groups that became known as The Family and Up Against The Wall Motherfxxxer , continuing protests around New York City. In this newspaper, the lead article is “Revolution: Now and Forever” and page 3 shows “Mississippi” lynching photo combined with text about beauty contestant “Miss Mississippi of 1962” visiting New York for the Miss America contest. Some tanning of page edges with tiny corner off last page. Next is small poster 10.25 x 13.25” documented by the collector Marshall Levin with penciled tiny “83” date on back corner. Event was a march from Tompkins Park to Central Park “Sponsored By The First Of May Anarchist Committee” with text declaring “May Day is Fxxx Work Day” . Near Mint. Two rare far left items from the Marshall Levin Collection. Comes with Hake’s COA.
