Item Description
Complete set of five 8x10" pictures on card stock w/choice art. ACC# R83-2. ©1938. Not only were these issued prior the the 1940 Gum Inc. card set, they feature art that was not reproduced on any of those cards. Pictures are: #1 Tonto Saves The Lone Ranger (variety w/mask overprint on LR), #2 The LR Licks Lester, #3 The LR Rescues Joan At The Pit, #4 Tonto Fights Off The Troopers, #5 The LR Foils A Murder. #4 is variety w/text back, all others are blank back variety. The one text back notes the pictures in this "Series A" w/mention of additional series although these were never produced. Also includes info on how they were obtained, what children could do with the pictures, etc. The pictures were available in different configurations, from individually for five wrappers and 3¢, up to a complete set of five for 25 wrappers and 10¢. Picture #2 has lt. 2.5" crease at lower right corner. Otherwise clean and VG/EX. The other four have trace of corner tip wear and some lt. aging to backs but all fronts are bright and clean w/rich color. EX/NM. Rarely found as a set and in this condition. Also included is the rarely seen retailer's mailing envelope. Includes image of LR on Silver holding one of these pictures. This is the env. that was used to send the pictures once they were ordered, but this has overprint text expressly for retailer's noting that the pictures could now be ordered directly from Gum Inc. and then sold to their customers rather than having them send away for them. Well worn w/8" tear across top and bottom, back flap partially missing, as is a 2x3" piece from lower right. Only Fair but rare. A very desirable set.
