Item Description
18-7/8x24.75” thin art board has 18x23.5” India ink image area w/12 panels for Oct. 1, 1905. Storyline has Buster watching his pretty cousin Fanny meeting a new boyfriend. They decide to stroll to an orchard, but Buster gets to an apple tree first and boosts Tige up in the tree. The couple takes a seat under the tree and an apple hits the boyfriend on the head, followed by a falling Tige who shouts “Catch Me, Buster!”. Buster falls out of the tree onto the boyfriend's head. Buster rubs his head saying “Tige, You’re A Peach, You Are!”. The boyfriend runs after Buster as Fanny cries “Come Back, George” and Tige warns her “If He Touches Buster I’ll Bite Him”. Next panel has boyfriend in mid-air w/Tige biting him on the seat of his pants, Buster on the ground, and frantic Fanny in background. “Resolved” panel has Buster w/bandaged head saying “I Very Much Regret The Whole Circumstance” as Tige winks and grins. Hand lettered resolution text suggests not to “Take Liberties With Any Of Nature’s Laws. They Are Boomerangs”. Buster notes he can’t remember these things “Until After I Get Stung-Or Bit, Cracked Or Thrashed. None Of Us Can, Until Old R.E. Morse Tells Us”. Signed “Buster Brown” w/artist-creator “R.F. Outcault” ink signature beneath Tige. Panel three is complete w/New York Herald paper copyright strip. Inside panel edges on left side have pin holes, as does blank margin edge on right side, likely done by the artist to keep board in place while drawing. Left edge of panel four has .25” missing piece, left side of panel seven has 2.5” barely visible tear. Margin edges slightly tanned, but image area otherwise Fine/VF. A prime early example for the classic comic strip which ran from 1902 until the early 1920s. Most pages had fewer panels. Any Buster Brown Sunday page original art by Outcault is extremely desirable and rarely comes on the market. The first we’ve offered in our 47 years.
