Item Description
7/8" button without dot pattern. Reverse has original paper label naming the Philadelphia branch of W&H. Inserted in the back are traces of fabric as an American flag bow was once there and formed an accent to the left and right of the button. Those parts of fabric are gone although the back paper, with slightly worn edge and fabric beneath still remains. Front of the piece is NM displaying Mint. Crawford was known as 'The Poet Scout'. He was a Civil War veteran and served as a scout in the West. He became a national celebrity following a daring ride of 350 miles in six days to carry dispatches from Ft. Laramie for the New York Herald to tell the news of the victory by General George Crook against the Indian Chief American Horse at the Battle Of Slim Buttes 1876. Later, from 1893 to 1898, Crawford built a national reputation as an entertainer in music halls and stages all over the country lecturing on the West. This button is likely from one of those appearances. One of two examples we know of.
