Item Description
Art is by Malcolm Smith for story by Chester S. Geier in Vol. 19 #2 June 1945 issue. 14.25x20 sheet of stipple illustration board has 12.25x17-7/8” image area in India ink and Conte crayon w/white paint highlights. Story title is nicely hand lettered. Futuristic living room setting has pretty woman in long gown looking at pretty female robot in chair across room w/man standing behind her. Art is initialed in ink by artist at lower left “MS ‘45”. Vertical crease through center as submitted by artist, art board is lightly but evenly tanned. Bottom margin has lt. moisture marks extending just a bit into image area, but most of image area will mat and frame to Fine appearance. Comes w/reading copy of the pulp this art appeared in w/story subtitled “Lilith Was Only A Robot, So It Couldn’t Be Murder To Get Rid Of Her, Could It ?”. Malcolm Smith (1910-1966) was a major sci-fi pulp artist . In the mid-1930s he was doing art for Chicago newspaper ads. His first pulp magazine art appeared in 1944 for Ziff-Davis titles. He became their art director in 1949 and also did cover paintings for paperbacks and sci-fi digests. Impressive and well done. From the Don Maris Collection.
