Item Description
14.5x15.75" artboard has original pen and ink art by Tony Tallarico, a comic book artist who drew primarily for Charlton Comics and Dell Comics — including for the comic book "Lobo," the first to star an African-American. Offered here is Tallarico's original art for the cover to Dell Comics "Dracula" #4, published in Nov., 1966. "Dracula" was a superhero comic book series published by Dell, based on classic Universal Monsters (the other titles were similar superhero takes on Frankenstein and Wolfman). Dracula lasted three issues, all published in 1966 and numbered 2 through 4. (#1, published in 1962, was an adaptation of the 1931 film). In this comic, Dracula is a modern day descendant of Count Dracula who works as a medical researcher developing a bat blood serum which gives him "vampire" powers which include turning into a bat, superhuman sight and hearing. He decides to embark on a superhero career to redeem the family name, developing his body to the peak of physical perfection and designing a superhero costume, complete w/bat-shaped belt buckle. Obviously inspired by Batman, Dracula's costume is quite similar (minus the cape) and he even had his own secret cave headquarters and Fleeta, a female sidekick similar to Batgirl. Cover art shows Dracula in his costume being surprised by a ghost who knocks over dishes. 1.75x2.5" paste-over on Dracula's foot, likely a correction. Art has felt tip pen editorial notations at top and bottom margins. Artboard is lightly aged but VF overall. Comes w/color mechanical art for finished comic book cover, though this differs slightly from published cover as "In This Issue" text was struck from finished product. Comes in aged 14.5x20" mat which has various editorial notations. Art itself is Exc. Comes w/reading copy of the actual comic book.
