Item Description
Period hardcover is 6x9" w/title on the spine in gold "Catcher 1900." Contains the first 25 issues of this publication for which the primary focus was all aspects of baseball at the time. Each issue is typically eight pages, primarily bw although some of the cover photos are tinted in a single solid color. The first issue is titled "El Catcher" and is from April 15th. Issues 2 to 25 bear the title "El Petit Habana" a name change that is covered by a paragraph of text in the second issue. Issue 25 is from Sept. 30th. All text is in Spanish. Content is a highly detailed account of baseball activities of the day including articles and extensive stats. Cuban games/players are the primary focus but also covered in some detail are Major League, Negro League and US college teams/games. While each issue has a photo cover, only the first issue has an inside photo. That issue has the highlight of the entire bound volume, a two page photo of the Cuban X-Giants team that toured Cuba. 10 players are shown including the legendary Sol White. The previous page has a box score for game between the Cuban X-Giants and "Criollo". Giants players listed include National Baseball HOF member Frank Grant. Cover photos of note include Cuban HOF members such as Juan Manuel Pastoriza, Eugenio Jimenez, Alfredo Arcano, Carlos "Bebe" Royer, Arturo Valdes, Luis Padron. Obvious wear/aging to the cover and contents. Cover has some moisture staining, overall Good. Separation along inside spine but all issues are intact as bound. Pages have aged, there are some random page tears but all pages remain supple and all is complete/intact as bound. Contents for the most part Fine and can be read/flipped through without issue (as any baseball historian would want to do). An invaluable (and accurate) reference for (in many cases) lost information on the games/players of this era. From the Richard Merkin Collection and comes with COA.
