Item Description
5.5x8.5 album w/cardboard cover and 10 pages. A caramel candy company issue for "Aguilas Cibaenas" (Eagles) team of the Dominican Republic's Winter League. Text throughout is in yellow but a bit hard to read on the front cover against the tan stock. Cover title translates as "Championship Memories Of Professional Baseball Team" and dated 1951. The title is above the attached (as issued) glossy team photo at center. Text below this includes team name and issuer "Caramelos Fortuna." Designed to hold 21 glossy photo cards, each 1.25x1.5". Page fronts have number blocks for the cards and page backs have detailed bio and stats for that player. The key to the set is #1 Martin Dihigo. Great image of him in street clothes. Based on his bio text, this is a tribute card for him coming the year after he retired from playing baseball (1950) and due to the fact that he was a star on this team it's inaugural year of 1937. A reference is made to him as being the most important Latin player. The other cards mounted at appropriate spots are: 2,3,6,7,9,10,13,17-19,21. This includes Pedro Formental and Pedro Alomar. The other 9 cards are missing including #20 Ramon Vargas. Pages have scattered wear including where some of the cards have been removed, block for #15 has been clipped. However cards as mounted remain fairly clean and glossy, especially Dihigo. Cover has moderate wear w/some aging and moisture stain to back. An interesting rarity and a must have for the Dihigo completist. From the Richard Merkin Collection and comes with Hake's COA.
