Item Description
Charles Schulz first introduced Snoopy as Joe Cool on May 27, 1971. This first year example of Joe is dated “9-22”. 7.5x28” thin art board w/5.5x27” India ink image area w/Snoopy in all four panels wearing sunglasses next to his dog house going over “Language Courses For This Term”, including Hebrew, Korean, and Serbian. Linus comes by in panel three and says “Hi, Joe…I See You’re Down For Bonehead English Again…” and Snoopy sighs in panel four. Signed in ink by creator “Schulz” in fourth panel. Complete w/ applied United Feature Syndicate tag in panel three. Has usual fold line from mailing in blank margin between panel two and three, blank top margin has minor glue stain, image area is clean and Exc. Comes w/ 3.75x6.5” mailing envelope w/image of Snoopy typing on dog house beneath artist’s address postmarked ”Sep 27 ‘71” addressed to school teacher in Pa. Folded letter inside on matching stationery suggests contacting man at syndicate to obtain “an original strip” for display as was done. Signed in ink “Charles M. Schulz” by Schulz’s secretary. Top of envelope has been torn open, otherwise Fine w/ Exc. letter. Historic and well drawn “Joe Cool” first year example.
