Item Description
1941. 7.25x7-3/8” mat has 4.75x4.75” window revealing highly detailed pen and ink scene of couple standing in flower field. Signed “Virgil Finlay” at lower right. Art was published in “Fantastic Novels” issue #5 April 1941 story “The Dwellers In The Mirage” by A. Merritt. Pencil caption referring to marriage ceremony is visible in border below art underneath mat, but this differs a bit from the published caption. Reverse side of art has “Frank Munsey Co.” ink stamp and printing notes. Vintage mat has bit of edge wear, easily replaced. Art is Exc. A heavily worn and brittle issue of the pulp which has this art and also has a Finlay cover just comes along. Noted as one of the most famous fantasy artists of the 20th century, Finlay produced large quantities of work with meticulous scratch board techniques, involving black ink applied to white board. Finlay would scratch away the ink to reveal his images. Providing work for science fiction pulp “Amazing Stories” and horror/fantasy pulp “Weird Tales,” Finlay quickly became a fan favorite. An incredible example of Finlay’s work.
