Item Description
Sendak (1928-2012) illustrated Jan Wahl’s "Pleasant Fieldmouse," first published in 1964 and still in print today. Jan Wahl is the author of more than 100 books, some of note include: "Humphrey’s Bear, I Met A Dinosaur" and "Elf Night." His awards include the Avery Hopwood Prize, the Ohioana Award, and the Christopher Medal. 9x9" high quality wood frame w/checkerboard pattern has archival mat w/2-3/8x2-5/8" window. Superbly detailed drawing in India ink has cheerful boy eating apple under tree w/deer nearby about to catch falling apple as birds flutter around nest in tree. Art is signed in ink at bottom " For Jan Wahl M. Sendak". Reverse side has applied typewritten sticker including text " Pen & Ink Drawing Gift Of The Artist To Jan Wahl 1964, Possibly Earlier, NYC". Exc. Wonderful example of Sendak's pen work. Sendak original art is hard to come by, let alone a piece this detailed, early and w/the additional appeal of being given to a collaborator.
