Item Description
5x7" glossy exceptional portrait-style image of Clemente in his Santurce uniform. Bottom margin has publication notations. Reverse has extensive hand written publication and other notations along with ink stamp date of Mar. 2 1954 and "Property Of The Sporting News" in addition to "Sporting News Collection" hologram authentication sticker. Also adhered to back is small newspaper clipping with text in part reading "He Hit .282 In The Puerto Rican Winter League For Santurce And Will Join The Royals For Spring Training At Vero Beach, Florida On March 14." Clemente was signed by Santurce in 1952, the youngest player to be signed by the team. A little over a year later he was drafted by the Brooklyn Dodgers to play for their Minor League team the Montreal Royals. Ultimately he ended up having his Major League debut with the Pittsburgh Pirates on April 17, 1955. He would go on to become one of the game's true legends with accolades including a 15-time All-Star, 12 Gold Glove awards, four NL batting titles, 1966 NL MVP and two-time World Series champion. In 1973 he was inducted into the HOF. Front of photo has noticeable tan aging around the image but image itself is not really affected and remains clean and sharp. Additional aging on the reverse. VG. A wonderful early image.
