Item Description
1.5" with backpaper by Los Angeles maker Wm. H. Hoegee. Text surrounds cartoon-like illustration of a large rock with features of 1912 candidate Woodrow Wilson. The design along the lower edge of the "head" suggests a coat lapel as well. Mount Wilson is among the peaks in the San Gabriel mountains near Los Angeles. The mountain was named for the first recorded exploration by Benjamin Davis Wilson, grandfather to George S. Patton, Jr. A telescope was installed at the summit in 1908 and this became the current Mount Wilson Observatory. The event that apparently ties the mountain to Woodrow Wilson was the opening of a toll road to automobiles in 1912, the year of Wilson's first and successful presidential campaign. The implication of the button's slogan is that Woodrow Wilson is superior to his presidential contenders. This button was included in the last issue of the APIC Keynoter devoted to Wilson but this is the only example we have been able to offer in five decades. NM displaying Mint.
