Item Description
In conjunction with a post-season visit by the AL Champion Detroit Tigers, Cabanas brand cigarettes issued this set. 35 cards are known in the set which featured three teams: Detroit Tigers, Almendares and Habana. Each team had its own specific border design/color around portrait photo image on the front with player name and position below. Text on back references both Cuban and American players and promotes Cabanas cigarettes. Cards measure 1.5x2.25". This card featuring Petway is from the Habana Lions subset. This is one of the key cards in this set. Surface paper loss on back downgrades the card to Poor but front of card has strong image and deep red color. A legend of the Negro Leagues, Petway played for several teams including the Leland Giants and Chicago American Giants. While playing in Cuba in 1910, he reportedly threw Ty Cobb out three times, in three attempts to steal. Designated by SGC as being from the "Richard Merkin Collection" and comes with Hake's COA.
