Item Description
8.5x13" typewritten contract consisting of six sheets is an agreement dated January 3, 1961 for three years ending January 3, 1964 "Between Fred Brown, First Party, Here And After Referred To As The Manager And Delphi's (as spelled in contract) Second Party, Popularly And Professionally Known As Delphi's Here And After Referred To As The Artist". Contract is in the amount of one dollar naming Brown as "Exclusive Business Manager, Personal Representative, And Adviser". Contract is signed in ballpoint pen on last sheet "Fred Brown, Gloria Williamson, Lester Watson, Martha Reeves, Rosalind Ashford, Annette Beard" and has also been signed in the presence of Katie Brown, Ruby Lee Reeves (Martha Reeves mother), Mary Ashford, and Ann Beard. Sheet has "Notary Public John Rogers Lawrence" signature and seal at lower right. Contract has been folded in half horizontally as stored and has trace of lt. aging around extreme edges with a few lt. handling creases here and there. Overall Fine/VF with near Exc. signature area. In 1957 Martha Reeves had her first association with Rosalind Ashford, Gloria Williamson and Annette Beard who had already formed The Del-Phis. In 1961 the group changed their name to the Vels and recorded unsuccessful singles for Checker and Checkmate Records. In the summer of 1962 the group recorded background vocals for Marvin Gaye's "Stubborn Kind Of Fellow" which became a hit. Motown offered the group a recording contract. Before they could sign, Gloria Williamson left the group which then became a trio changing their name to Martha and the Vandellas. The rest, as they say, is history. "Come And Get These Memories" became their first top-40 record and "Love Is Like A Heatwave" reached #4 on the Hot 100 and hit #1 on the R&B singles chart for five weeks. It became their first million seller and eventually won the group their only Grammy award nomination. An early and historic document for Martha Reeves, a true Motown legend.
