Item Description
17x20.75" quality wood frame has archival mat with 10.5x14" paper sign in center. Text at top reads "Base Ball Original All Nation Base Ball Club Will Play Fullerton, N.D. Wednesday, July 18 1923". Bottom of sign has wonderful 5.25x8.5" photo showing 10-member team in full uniform with inset photo of manager John Donaldson. Sign has slight margin trim which does not affect appearance and displays Exc. as professionally framed and matted. The team was actually called "All Nations" and got its name from the fact that its team included players of several nationalities including blacks, whites, Indians, Asians, etc. The team was founded by the Hopkins Brothers sporting goods stores and J.L. Wilkinson who played for the team and eventually became manager and later became owner. The team was based out of Kansas City and Des Moines. Pitcher John Donaldson managed the team from 1923 to 1924. Donaldson was a pitcher in the pre-Negro league and Negro league baseball. He had a total of 203 double digit strikeout games and a batting average of .334 in over 1800 at bats. The way Donaldson managed and played on the All Nations team allowed Wilkinson's parent club the Kansas City Monarchs to make money. Great design and ready for display. From the Richard Merkin Collection and comes with Hake's COA.
