Fields played the Great McGonigle, the boisterous actor-manager of a traveling theater group that never has enough money and is always just one step ahead of the law. Fields had a reputation of not liking children which makes this photo all that more interesting as he doesn't seem to mind having his nose squeezed by his co-star who is sitting on his lap with Field's arm around him.
