Item Description
1.25" with W&H backpaper used 1900-1912. Choice color depiction of this incredible horse doing one of his counting tricks posed before the open drawer of a cash register on a stand. While Jim Key traveled extensively most likely this button was a souvenir from the St. Louis Exposition where he was a huge favorite. He was owned and trained by Dr. William Key a slave-born self trained veterinarian. The horse was credited with abilities to read, write, spell, do math, tell time, sort mail, use a cash register and a telephone, recite Bible passages and engage in political debate. He was known as "The Marvel Of The Twentieth Century" and "The Greatest Crowd Drawer In America." This color button is a good bit scarcer than the somewhat larger button showing him spelling out his name with lettered cards. N. Mint, displaying Mint.
