Item Description
This rare 7/8" campaign button with W&H back paper is a variety of Hake #298. On this example all the text is in gold rather than in black as shown on the book example. The design features a photo of McKinley's head but all the rest is artwork including the bicycling cap he wears. Front wheel of the bike is inscribed in gold "Gold" and rear wheel of the bike is inscribed in gold "Silver." The right side of the button has some air under the celluloid so this appears a little whiter in tone than the rest. There are just a couple tiny faint age dots along the very bottom edge. On the reverse there is a .5" hairline cello split by the collet but the cello lays perfectly flat. A rare 1896 cartoon button and the first we've seen.
