Item Description
22.5x31" wood frame displays 20.25x28.75" stiff paper calendar issued by “Don Q” rum. Top of poster has two team photos with 1948-49 champions “Mayaguez” at left and runner up team “Santurce” at right. Includes list of professional baseball Puerto Rican champions from 1938-1948. 1949 was the first year that the Mayaguez Indians won the championship. Has various stats for the season and includes 25 different individual player photos with Luke Easter and Alfonso Girard in center next to “Don Q” logo. Large image of Dan Bankhead at bottom center. Bankhead (1920-1976) was the first black pitcher in major league baseball. He was signed by Branch Rickey and had his major league debut in 1947 for the Brooklyn Dodgers. He hit a home run in his first major league at bat in Ebbetts Field against the Pittsburgh Pirates. He was shipped to the minor league for the 1948 and 1949 seasons and returned to the Dodgers in 1950 appearing in 41 games with 12 starts and nine wins. 1951 was his final year in the majors, pitching in seven games and losing only one decision with an ERA of 15.43. Other players shown include Alonso Perry and Jim Lamarque. Scattered wear with dust soil and creasing and some moisture marks. Top right has some minor restoration. Overall just Good but still displays nicely as professionally framed. Rare. From the Richard Merkin Collection and comes with Hake’s COA.
