Item Description
14-7/8x16-5/8” wood frame has archival mat with 10.25x12-1/8” opening revealing vintage mat holding 8-1/8x9.75” photo with hand-inked title and players’ names. Photo shows 11 players in “World’s Colored Champions” uniforms with additional man in center kneeling with baseball equipment. Inked names include Wallace, Puch, Hewitt, Poles, Grant, Redding, Santop, Wiley, Gatewood, Sykes and Williams. Kneeling man is named Cook. The Lincoln Giants were a Negro League baseball team based in New York City from 1911 through 1930. With their powerful line-up, they were the dominant team in African American baseball in 1911, 1912 and 1913 winning the unofficial eastern championship in each of those years. In 1913 they defeated the Chicago American Giants for the National Black Championship. Photo has yellowed with age, noticeable dust soiling but o/w near Fine appearance. Displays great as professionally framed and matted. Rare. From the Richard Merkin Collection and comes with Hake's COA.
