Item Description
1”. Unlisted in Hake. Additional text on the button reads “Local 284/L.W.I.U.” These initials stand for the Laundry Worker’s International Union. This was a small 6,000-member union in 1930 and locals were disorganized and poorly funded. In 1934, the NRA established a maximum 40-hour work week (with an allowance of overtime) and hourly rates according to 5 different geographic areas. Apparently union leaders favored this legislation and endorsed FDR in 1936. There are re-pins known of this button but we do not believe this to be one of them. We do believe it is an original. Many of the re-pins we have seen of this button have an artificially oxidized (done with acid) reverse. This reverse has no such markings. In addition, the design of the collet perfectly matches the following 1936 item for which there are no re-pins. Button is N. Mint and displays Mint.
