Item Description
.75” button with inscription in Italian which says “Save The Refugees 1 May 1927.” This text surrounds small design of a gallows with English text alongside “Down With Fascism.” Mussolini dissolved the Italian Parliament in 1925 and became dictator. This button from 1927 was perhaps issued by the Association Of Italian Jewish Women perhaps in conjunction with the Italian Refugees Relief Committee which was set up in 1927 as a non-political humanitarian organization to raise funds to support those fleeing Mussolini. At the time, British immigration prevented refugees coming into Britain but there was also a British committee that sent funds and aid to their French counterpart and a large exile community developed in Paris. Although button does not carry a backpaper or maker’s name, it is likely of USA origin and used as a fund raiser in America. About the second we’ve seen. Essentially Mint.
