Item Description
11x14" stiff paper has original specialty pen and ink art of Red Ryder and Little Beaver riding toward Knoxville, as indicated by sign post. Little Beaver asks "Why You Make'm Big Rush Haste, Red Ryder?" to which Red Ryder replies "We're Headin' For Knoxville, Little Beaver, To Say 'Howdy' To Bill Dyer An' All Th' Other Good Folks!" Art is inscribed at bottom "With Best Wishes From Th' Three Of Us - Fred Harman." Bill Dyer was a fellow cartoonist for the Knoxville News Sentinel newspaper who, in 1938, sent out letters to fellow cartoonists asking them to submit guest cartoons in his "What A Life" feature. Red Ryder was created by Harman and began as a Sunday page in 1938. This piece dates to c. 1938-1940 and is the earliest specialty art we've seen as well as the nicest. 2.5x5" moisture stain in lower right corner w/scattered dust soiling not greatly detracting from overall appearance of art. Staining in lower left corner. Harman's name has two 1/8" sections of surface paper lift partially affecting his last name. If matted, would display VF. Great piece.
