Item Description
See previous FDR signed letter with reference to award being given Mr. Pope by Mr. Lucca's organization. Mr. Pope (originally Generoso Papa) arrived in NYC from Venevento, Italy in 1906 at age 15 with $10 and little understanding of English. From working on the Pennsylvania Railroad's East River Tunnel at $3 per week, by applying ambition and brains, he built an industrial and media empire during the 1920s and 1930s and became a key figure in N.Y. politics also advising presidents Roosevelt and Truman. His son became owner and publisher of the National Enquirer in the 1980s. This lot is of two typed letters on his "551 Fifth Avenue" N.Y. stationery, each a sheet folded to 6.5x8.25". Both are addressed to Mariano Lucca. One from Jul. 3, 1937 thanks Lucca for a recent letter. Center crease plus a lt. crease below. Lightly tanned but clean. Second letter from Nov. 3, 1937 thanks Lucca for a letter and pamphlet. Front sheet is tanned with some scattered white marks of "ghost" writing where the paper laid against another sheet. Photo is 8x10" glossy signed on upper left "Genereoso Pope." Photo was published (probably by Buffalo newspaper where Lucca worked). Reverse has Pope's name in ink and couple of pencil notations as to size for publication. Because used for publication, photo image has bit of airbrushed off-white color by Pope's cheek and back of his head to make image stand out from bkg. An interesting lot for a famous Italian American. Comes with Hake's COA.
