Item Description
13x13.5" stiff paper sheet with the original art and hand-done text is mounted to slightly larger stiff parchment paper-like sheet. Art and text is pen and ink. At lower right is 4.5" tall image of Mickey Mouse holding a fountain pen, behind Mickey is his shadow done in watercolor creating a nice effect. Mickey is shown finishing the letter by signing his name. Addressed to "Dr. Rubin G. Alley The Western Pennsylvania Hospital, Pittsburgh, PA." with return address of "Hollywood, California." The hand-done text reads in full "Dear Doc: I'm Awfully Sorry You Had Trouble On Account Of My Adventures In The Comic Strip. Of Course I Know X-Rays Can't Hurt You, But Horace Didn't Know It And The Professors Are All Crazy, So They Didn't! Do You See? So I Hope You'll Show This Letter To The Little Boy Who Was Scared, And Tell Him That When Anything Gets Wrong With Me, The First Thing Gets Wrong With Me, The First Thing I Do Is Go To A Hospital. And Then I Do Whatever The Doctor Tells Me. 'Cause Doctors Always Know Best. Your Pal, Mickey Mouse." This is in reference to the 1932 Mickey Mouse comic strip continuity, "Blaggard Castle" in which Mickey and Horace faced Professor Ecks, Doublex and Triplex, three mad scientist brothers out to test their new hypnotic ray. The brothers explained they weren't sure that the ray would work "If Our Ray Is Shorter Than An X-Ray, Your Brain Will Be Hypnotized...But If It Isn't, Then It Will Be An X-Ray! And Your Brain, Instead Of Being Hypnotized, Will Be Burned!" This claim about X-rays obviously scared some young readers of the strip including some patients of the doctor whose mentioned on this original piece of art. Evidently the doctor contacted the Disney Studio where the Mickey Mouse comic strip unit was enlisted to produce the art by way of apology. The art and lettering style matches those of the story which was drawn by Floyd Gottfriedson and inked by Ted Thwaites. While we can't commit to who actually did the art, it was definitely done by an artist from the Disney Studio comic strip department. Art sheet has some lt. corner creases, left margin has a 2" tear neatly repaired as mounted and only noticeable when viewed closely. Left center margin has .25x.75" sliver of paper missing, right margin has a .25x1.5" sliver of paper missing, none of this affects the art in any way. Sheet remains clean and all art is Exc. with just some white correction touch-ups to some of the text. Historic and unique.
