Item Description
This lot contains approximately 10 authetic strands of Surratt's hair housed in a plastic pouch and laid down on a presentation document. The presentation document also includes: an "Image Of Mary Surratt Taken From A Contemporary CDV Owned By Samuel Curtis," a copy of an entry from the original diary kept by Samuel Curtis who obtained the hair, referencing the hair and a photograph of Surratt and the conspirators seated on the gallows shortly before they were executed. Mary Surratt was the owner of the boarding house where John Wilkes Booth met his co-conspirators to plot Lincoln's assassination. Samuel Curtis was a member of the 8th Regiment that was present at the execution of four conspirators in the assassination of President Abraham Lincoln at the old penitentiary in Washington, D.C. Surratt was hung along with three men who had conspired with Booth. She is reported to have been the first to die. The hair was obtained by Curtis shortly after her death. He was likely to have been one of the men at the foot of the gallows. Orignally obtained from Heritage auctions 2/2006. Comes with Hake's COA.
