Item Description
Lot of six pieces, all are original art for 1938 premium promotion by "Dwarfies Jumbo Rice." First is 10x21" prototype sign on artist tracing paper w/art in colored pencil. Text notes the seven different punch-out cards in this series w/titles "Herby And Smitty, Moon Mullins, Andy Gump, Perry Winkle, Harold Teen, Dick Tracy, Gasoline Alley." These were available w/packages of rice and each card featured "Puppets That Actually Open And Close Their Mouths." Reverse of sheet has thin layer of glue staining, pair of vertical crease lines at center but still displays VF. Second is large 16x19.5" sheet of artist tracing paper w/detailed lead and colored pencil art of all seven puppet sets shown slightly overlapped. Probably a sign design. Has pair of ft. vertical folds at center but sheet is clean and all art is Exc. The next two pieces are each 11x17" and comprise the front and back of a mailer folder. Each is on artist tracing paper w/art in colored pencil. The sheet for the front has folded size of 5.5x8.5" and front features stage curtain w/text "The Curtain's Going Up." This opens once to reveal stage w/curtain half-way up showing lower half of characters' bodies. The second sheet features the inside of the mailer folder design and this prototype shows stage at center featuring Kayo while at bottom are sketches of the seven puppet sheets and product box along w/some text. This sheet has additional lines where further text was to be added on the actual mailer. Both of these sheets have original fold lines as well as some lt. glue staining on reverse where once adhered back-to-back. Fine. The final two pieces are each about 6.5x8" and thin art board. One is stage section w/tempera and watercolor art while the other is puppet set #1 "Moon Mullins" w/pen and ink watercolor art. The stage section has diecut window, children audience members and pair of simulated posters tacked to sides showing stage set up plus "Cast" character list. The puppet sheet features character puppets of Moon, Kayo, Emmy and Lord Plushbottom. Hand-done text includes instructions and also notes that the puppet stage was "Printed On The Back Of Each Dwarfies Jumbo Rice Package.” Both of these pieces are extremely colorful and Exc. An exceptional lot. All prototypes are unique. This is a file copy from the archives of premium creators Sam & Gordon Gold accompanied by a letter to that effect from Gordon Gold.
