Item Description
Stunning painting framed to overall size of 37.75x46" by famed comic book artist Marc Swayze, created in the early 1970's. Swayze worked at Fawcett Comics from 1941 to 1953, primarily illustrating Captain Marvel stories and covers for Whiz Comics, Captain Marvel Adventures and Wow Comics. In Dec. 1942, Swayze, along with Otto Binder, co-created Mary Marvel, an important member of the Marvel family to this day. Swayze also wrote Captain Marvel scripts from time to time. He is also noted for his work on "The Phantom Eagle" in Wow Comics, "The Flyin' Jenny" newspaper strip and Fawcett romance titles "Sweethearts" and "Life Story". Once Fawcett ceased publishing comic books, Swayze moved to Charlton Comics, where he ended the comic book phase of his career in 1956. Later, in the 1970s, he taught for two years at Northeast Louisiana University. The painting we are offering was not a commissioned piece, but was done for a faculty art exhibit at the university. We contacted Swayze, and he said he painted landscapes in oil from the 1930s through the 1990s. He told us this is one of only two or three Captain Marvel paintings he ever did and by far his favorite. In it, an elderly Captain Marvel reminisces in an attic amongst copies of Whiz Comics and Captain Marvel Adventures, actual back issues Swayze had in his home! Captain Marvel, unchanged by time except for gray hair and the eyeglasses he holds, reflects on his past and his thought balloon lists himself along with Captain Marvel creator C.C. Beck, Beck's assistant and later business partner Pete Costanzi, Fawcett editor Rod Reed, Fawcett artist Chic Stone, Beck colleague and "Mike Hammer" strip artist Ed Robbins and Jack Bender Studios employee/Fawcett editor Wendall Crowley. Thought balloon reads: "Let's See Now...There Was Beck, Pete And Swayze...And Reed, Stone, Robbins, Crowley And The Others...Oh, What A Wild And Motley Crew Were We!" Our consignor was a friend of Swayze's, and upon a visit to Swayze's home, he saw this painting and eventually bought it from Swayze. It was later featured as cover art for Alter Ego Magazine #18 in Oct. 2002. Swayze has written a column titled "We Didn't Know...It Was The Golden Age!" since 1996 and at 93 years of age, continues to regularly contribute to Alter Ego. A wonderful portrait in oils, nicely detailed with beautiful colors. Mint.
