Item Description
Complete set of four 14.5x18-3/8" artboards featuring mixed media original art w/screentone accents for four-page story published as part of The Big Book Of series of graphic novel anthologies published by DC Comics under their Paradox Press imprint between 1994 and 2000. The Big Book Of Death was published 1995 and examines the various taboos, rituals and history of death, presenting an assortment of amusing and disturbing fats and stories. Art is by Duncan Eagleson, a self-trained painter and former graffiti artist whose career has included designing book covers as well as creating movie posters and comic book art such as that offered here. Eagleson did a single issue each of Vertigo's flagship titles - Shade, The Changing Man and Sandman. Eagleson's "Embalming: Better Dying Through Chemicals" story sees a woman meeting w/funeral director regarding her recently deceased husband. She doesn't want him embalmed, causing the funeral director to walk her through the initial stages of decomposition before the widow cuts her off in disgust. The history of embalming is then explained and the process itself is discussed. The widow leaves when she discovers that the embalming does not come w/a "Lifetime Guarantee." Art features some collage elements, w/photocopy of Civil War embalmer and his business cards included as well as a storefront. Mortician seen performing embalming in story has a distinct Peter Cushing look to him and whole story has a pre-Code, EC Comics feel. Each artboard comes w/acetate overlay w/clipped out word balloon/caption stats pasted in place. Top margin is each artboard has penciled book title w/"Death" written in black felt tip pen, as is "Embalming" abbreviated story title. Artboards have aged printer centering tapes at margins, but o/w art remains clean and Exc.
