Item Description
2.5x3.5" from Skybox limited edition of 400, in cooperation w/Bongo Comics. The 1993 Skybox Simpsons base set had 80 base cards w/several different insert sets including temporary tattoos, Wiggle lenticular cards, animation cel cards, glow-in-the-dark cards and most importantly limited Art DeBart cards featuring original artwork by The Simpsons creator Matt Groening. Embossed gilt frame design on front of card has black felt tip pen original art portrait of Bart Simpson by Groening. Art has hand-lettered word balloon that reads "Original Art, Man!" w/Groening's signature at bottom. Groening's felt tip pen is a bit lt. in areas (mainly confined to signature) but all remains legible. Back of card has been hand-numbered "231/400" in black felt tip pen. The set had redemption cards randomly inserted that expired 6-30-1994. Once redeemed, Groening would then draw on the gold-embossed cards, which would be mailed back to the consumers. Some of these redemption cards were obviously never redeemed since there are still unopened boxes/packs available. Since every card was done at different times and at Groening's discretion, most cards are of Bart drawn differently (i.e. waving, sitting, profile, etc.) w/various word balloons or no word balloons as well as some drawings of Homer in various depictions. The PSA/DNA census has ONLY 11 total cards dual certified, w/an additional six being PSA graded; making for a total of 17 cards (as of Sept. 2023), w/this card one of just two 9 Mint examples w/no card graded higher. We sold a similar Art DeBart card w/word balloon in our July 2023 auction for $13,769. A highly desirable and unique card.
