Item Description
2.5x4" card stock. Front has photo of Jackie in his Brooklyn Dodgers uniform and this is the same image (in a colorized version) that appears on his 1953 Topps card, card #1 in that classic set. Back of card has typed name of original recipient "Tom Reekie" (see his rare Mickey Mantle fan club membership card and button as the previous two lots) between the text "The Holder Of This Card Is A Sports Authority." Additional text touts the sports knowledge of the card holder and that he is a subscriber to "Our Sports" magazine. Has Jackie's facsimile signature on both sides of the card. Our Sports was an African-American sports magazine that was edited by Jackie. Published in 1953, it lasted only five issues. Included in this lot is issue #2 from June w/Monte Irvin on the cover. The inside front cover is a full page subscription ad which prominently features the card offered here. The single issues had a cover price of 25¢ while the subscription was $2 for a full year and the card came along as a bonus. The magazine in general did not sell well, and subscriptions even less so, resulting in the short life of this magazine and the extreme rarity of this card. The mag is a worn reading copy that just comes along but great documentation for the card. Card has rounded corners as printed. There are some very faint crease lines seen only upon close inspection as caused when the card went through the typewriter to apply name. Card remains bright and clean w/sharp and bold image. Eye appeal far exceeds the designated grade. This is the only example known and only recently unearthed as part of a collection of baseball material from a Canadian collector who was a huge fan of the game in the 1950s and joined many different MLB player fan clubs at that time, many that even few US fans joined (more to come in future auctions). For those looking for a truly special artifact for this legendary sports icon, look no further. It is not often a previously never before offered Jackie Robinson item appears at auction, but that is exactly what we have here.
