Item Description
14.5x14.5" artboard features mixed media original art depicting King Cole watching "His Fiddlers Three" perform - noted as "Truman,  Lewis And Congress Fiddling." Of note, King Coal wear a crown labeled "Coal Crisis," a clear reference to the yearly United Mine Workers of America strikes (1945-1950), instigated by their president John L. Lewis. Art is by noted editorial cartoonist Carey Orr (1890-1967), who worked for the Chicago Tribune for 46 years. Orr has signed his last name at lower right beside 1950 Chicago Tribune copyright strip. Lower left has been inscribed to Otis E. Hosom, signed by Orr and dated Feb. 3, 1950. Congress's hat has been reworked by Orr for publication, resulting in some surface abrasion to artboard. Some margin aging as once matted and framed, but VF/Exc. overall. Mike Nichols Collection.
