In 1964, Ernie McMillan went to work as a full-time staff member of SNCC, beginning his work in voter registration programs and demonstrations in Fort Valley and Lee County, Georgia. McMillan was later appointed to the position of field officer in Thomasville, Georgia where he "registered voters and ran Blacks for local offices. He was also at the Democratic National Convention in Atlantic City, New Jersey leading and participating in debates and protests while there. Shortly after the Democratic National Convention, McMillan decided to return to Dallas. In 1965, Ernest McMillan and some twenty-five students staged a protest against the Arlington State College's pro-confederate atmosphere, including its use of the confederate flag, rebel mascot, and Jim Crow policies. The students entered into a stand- off with the administration to have the confederate flag as well as the mascot, "The Rebel," removed from the institution. Ernie formed the Dallas arm of SNCC in 1966. Ernie fled Dallas July 1969 to avoid a five year prison sentence for his infraction with the draft board as well as ten years for his prior conviction for property damage which occurred during a SNCC protest.
