Item Description
1-5/8" tall bronze designed as aerial view of a toilet bowl with small loop on top edge and interior showing a sink with two faucets superimposed by a big-mouthed fish receiving a vicious upper cut from a fist which knocks a king's crown from the fish's head. The date 1933 in Roman numerals is to the right and the lower rim has Latin phrase which is repeated in English on the reverse as "By Public Acclaim For A Deed Done In Private" along with "Sand's Point/August 26, 1933." This was a Long Island Country Club where Long and some pals were dining and drinking. As the evening progressed, Long became drunk and unruly grabbing a women from another table and forcing her to dance with him. He then excused himself, went to the men's room and returned with a bloody forehead. The unknown assailant was a hero to many including the editors of Colliers magazine who Long had attacked earlier. Public consensus called for the creation of a gold medal paid for by public contributions and this was done by Collier's cartoonist George DeZayas and produced by Medallic Art Co. However, as no hero claimed it, it was given to the American Numismatic Society's library. A small number of smaller bronze medals were made but we don't know how they were distributed. The cartoonist's initials and © symbol are below the upside down "V" shape of the fish's tail. We've seen two in our 56 years. Luster loss but VF. Rare.
